Per Capita Productivity of Articles in Top Journals, 1993-2008 New England law Schools

Maine Law's faculty did quite well in a recent per capita productivity study of articles published in top-50 journals.

Here are the results for all New England law schools:

What's "per capita productivity" and why does it matter? This isn't a gripe, but rather a real inquiry about context. Why is this metric important to students, the Maine legal community, professors, employers, etc?

(I'm an alum, and a pre-law advisor, and I admit I don't immediately know to whom this metric matters).
